Understanding Insurance and Self-Pay for Therapy

6 min read · Updated May 28, 2026

In-network versus out-of-network care, superbills, sliding-scale rates, and questions worth asking before your first appointment.

In-network, out-of-network, self-pay

In-network care usually means a copay set by your plan. Out-of-network care means paying the full rate and possibly submitting a claim for partial reimbursement. Self-pay means no insurer is involved, which some people prefer for privacy reasons.

Questions to ask

Confirm the session rate, whether the professional is in-network with your specific plan, whether they provide a superbill, and whether sliding-scale spots are available. Ask about cancellation policies too.
